The nice feature of 3.5" gauge is it is used globally without having been distorted by a 0.25" - I find it frustrating that somehow 5" gauge became 4.75" as it crossed the seas and even more so that the west coast of North America chose 7.5" gauge when 7.25" was already set as a standard. And here I thought engineers took measurements seriously seems a tolerance of 0.25" is a little on the large side.  >:(

Id also add Maisie. Its incredibly easy and very powerful. Only availible widely in 3 1/2 gauge

Great advice from Ferd ... I would add the "Speedy" design to the list as well ... it is an 0-6-0 tank engine typically built to 5" or 4 3/4" gauge.  The reason I mention it is that they are phenomenally good runners .. there are several at our club and they are heard to beat in our annual Model Loco Efficiency Trials.

Here are a couple on Youtube:

The projects I really love are the Kozo series, originally published in Live Steam magazine and now available on hardcover. I feel they are great due to his ability to really explain every part of the process (design, machining, and assembly) using highly detailed drawings and steps.  Kozo produced a series on the Shay, Heisler, Climax and a simple 0-4-0 switcher. All live steam.  The next choice would be the Tich 0-4-0 3.5" gauge or a larger Simplex 0-6-0 5" gauge locomotive both have well documented assemblies in Model Engineering magazine although a little more difficult to track down all the issues. The Kozo books are 3.5" gauge with the needed info to make the engines 4.75/5" and 7.25/7.5" gauges.
