Hi Andy & Russ.

Thanks for your replies my message was not quite what I intended to send did a rough draft then refined it but when I tried to send the finished article a note came up to say that I had already posted the message however I have got the information I wanted.I realise that tools will be amassed as woodturning has been one of my hobbies for quite a number of years and this has a similar effect on the wallet.I bought Tubal Cain's book many years ago because it contained so much useful information even if you were not a model engineer. I have always been interested in engineering my all time hero has always been Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Cheers Bob.

Others must feel like you do .... you said:

"My best and most used buy wasn't a tool, 'twas The Model Engineers Handbook by Tubal Cain - essential as far as I am concerned."

Amazon says they have numerous copies available starting at 170 pounds!!!!

Hi Bob?

The ba threads are by far the most common here in model engineering but you will also come across 26, 32 and 40tpi ME threads although I think the 26tpi are actually "cycle" threads.
I bought a ba set, quite possibly from RDG I can't remember, and haven't regretted it.
Don't forget you will also need all the relevant drills for tapping and clearance holes - again a set is probably best value, especially if you intend to continue with this.

Be warned, you willl amass tools far faster than you do models.

My best and most used buy wasn't a tool, 'twas The Model Engineers Handbook by Tubal Cain - essential as far as I am concerned.

Cheers, Andy

I am new to model engineering and have just purchased a Stuart D50 engine as a first project. The drawings show holes which has to be tapped with BA threads,is this the most commonly used thread in model engineering in the UK.I was just wondering whether to buy just the particular taps and dies needed for this project or would it be better to buy a set I see RDG have a set which seems reasonably priced.I am recently retired so do not have unlimmited funds just looking for the best options.
