Then you need a crucible.  We have a couple but no pouring device so Mel thought it would be eaiser to make some out of pipe.  We got a 4 inch wide piece from our neighbor and cut up some different lenghts.  Then we thought it would be nice to have some ingot molds so I welded up some.  I read where it isn't good to put hot aluminum and steel together. I got kiln wash from a place north of me and coated the metal with it to protect it from the hot Aluminum.  The heating causes the aluminum to exchange ions so this serves to protect the aluminum molecules from getting iron on them I guess.

Of course you need a burner to heat the thing up so we followed a write up off the web and were real pleased with the results.

We have a furnace bottom donated to us plus some supplies.  We made a lid for it and a cart to haul it around and incorporate a handle to open the lid.  Some Pics.  More to follow.

This is exciting - maybe I will have a place to send parts for casting  ;) - I am envious of such open clean space.

We want a foundry so have turned part of the shop building into an area where we can set one up.  Some pics of our start.
